Black Jockeys
Not only were they the 1st to smash the color barrier against unthinkable odds during the time of slavery but they dominated race tracks across America and abroad. Their reign of greatness began in the 1600s and lasted nearly 300 years until the turn of the 20th century. Their legacy and pedigree of greatness established our country's most historic and traditional sporting event, the Kentucky Derby. In fact, 13 of the 15 jockeys in the 1st ever Run for the Roses were black, and African American jockeys were victorious in 15 of the 1st 28 editions of the Run for the Roses.
